The Sunday Reset: Taking Care Without Taking On More
For the mom who wants to care for herself without turning it into another checklist.
This week’s episode with Samantha Storz made me think about my skin.
Which is funny because, historically, I am not what you would call a skincare person.
I like the idea of being a skincare person and having a calming little nighttime routine with steps and products and intention.
But in reality, my skincare routine is very minimalist: occasional eye patches, a charcoal mask when I remember I own one, moisturizer if it’s sitting directly in front of me, and calling it good.
Then Sam came on the podcast and talked about skincare like it was not just another beauty thing, but a way she pays attention to herself, a way she cares for the skin she is living in every day.
And it made me realize I like the idea of taking good care of myself. I really do. But sometimes the gap between what sounds good and what actually happens is wide. Not because I don’t care, but because I’m tired. Because somebody needs something. Because the evening disappears. Because by the time the house is quiet, I am less “wellness routine” and more “please nobody speak to me.”
I don’t think Sam’s episode made me want to add a bunch of new tasks to my life and become a 12-step skincare person overnight.
But for me, the reset that happened was:
What are the ways I can integrate a few more ways to take care of myself without it feeling like another thing I need to check off the list?
Appreciating the ways I already take care of myself that feel small, but also bring joy. For some, it’s skincare, for me, it’s things like:
Keeping a full water jug next to me at all times.
Morning walks outside.
Eye patches while doing nighttime routine with my daughter.
Using my walking pad while checking email.
Stretching while we watch a show.
Reading before bed so my brain slows down.
The fun part about hearing stories from other moms is realizing we all have different ways of slowing down and caring for our bodies. Sometimes we learn a new tip. Sometimes we borrow a rhythm that works for someone else. And sometimes we simply realize we’re already caring for ourselves in small ways that count.
