Sunday Reset: "I AM THE MOM!"
Our Summer mindsets + simple ways to lighten the load
Most of us are a few weeks into our summer routines now, which means the novelty may or may not be wearing off, the snack requests are multiplying, and everyone is figuring out what kind of summer they’re actually going to have.
So this week on the Get Mom Ready Podcast, we caught up on our summer mindsets.
Hannah is leaning into a very intentional 90s summer strategy with the girls: low-lift fun, popsicles, playing outside, and not spending waterpark money when a splash pad will create the same amount of fun and the same amount of complaints. Then, naturally, they got caught in a downpour at the farthest part of their neighborhood walk, which basically turned into a free waterpark. Honestly, efficient.
Anna is in her Slip ’N Slide era, except her daughter has already decided the hose water is too cold. So now Anna is considering filling it up at lunch and letting the sun warm it by afternoon, which feels like the kind of summer science experiment we are all very invested in.
And our fabulous guest, Mary Scott Mercer, shared that this is her first “real” week of summer after sickness and travel, so she’s figuring out the rhythm: gym childcare, splash pads, library trips, lunch, rest, and the very important $20 Costco pool. Add a few mom friends, some backyard chaos, and suddenly you have what she lovingly called the “redneck yacht club.”
No matter what summer looks like for you right now, highly scheduled, very loose, full of camps, full of chaos, or powered almost entirely by popsicles, this past week’s episode is for you.
There was something so funny and comforting about all of it. None of us are trying to be the Pinterest cruise director. We are trying to give our kids a summer that feels fun and free without making ourselves completely unwell in the process.
But like most Get Mom Ready conversations, the silly catch-up eventually opened the door to something deeper when Mary Scott said,
“I wonder if we wouldn’t be having this screen time fight if I wasn’t having a screen time fight.”
Whew.
So yes, this episode has Costco pools and Slip ’N Slides and 90s summer energy. But it also has a really honest conversation about what happens when motherhood gets loud, overstimulating, and relentless, and we start noticing that our kids’ lack of boundaries may be revealing our own.
It’s funny. It’s practical. It’s a little too relatable. And if you have ever tried to create a magical summer while also wanting to scroll, escape, reset, or be left alone with one full thought, we think you’re going to love this one.
So here’s to the little shifts that make summer feel a little more doable for you, not just more magical for everyone else:
Maybe it’s putting the water cups out the night before. Maybe it’s deciding when screen time starts so you don’t have to negotiate it before coffee. Maybe it’s texting a mom friend and saying, “Backyard chaos at 4?” Maybe it’s letting the $20 pool be enough.
